5.No Winner and Docking of the Two Ideas

At the end of the competition, each idea contributed by Colani and Canon was examined.

The Canon proposal gave first priority to outstanding handling. Although its camera body consciously used large curves, the underlying design was an extension of the previous T-series models, considering the ease of manufacture. It was well put together, but did lack impact.

Colani’s design was true to his own style with its extensive use of curved surfaces, and had highly distinctive external features. Yet, it was not compatible with the conventional FD lens, and there were several difficulties in terms of the mechanical layout.

In the end, the two designs both had merits and demerits and that neither could be declared an outright winner. Whereupon, it was decided to develop a composite design based on the Canon in-house proposal, incorporating the essence of Colani’s bio-form.

Making several refinements to the mockup as depicted in the photo, the final mass production model for the T90 was completed. It was the outcome of their collaboration adopting the Colani's soft curved shape that streams off the top of the pentaprism cover and the Canon’s design for the grip section as well as the basic form of the camera body.

The T90 was born from the most ideal development process, synthesizing the good points of an external consultant’s design and that of Canon’s own in-house team.
