4.The Colani Meetings Started

The Colani MeetingsColani's 5 Systems, which were full of innovative ideas, had such a strong impact on the Canon people that Canon asked Colani for his assistance in the product design as well. The project team to develop the design for the T90 was organized in March 1984, cooperated with the industrial design division of ODS headed by Kunihisa Ito, who liaised between Colani and Canon.

Working from the practically finalized basic mechanical layout, they decided to adopt the competitive approach whereby the Canon team and the Colani group would each contribute their own ideas for the design of the T90.

Colani had no experience in the design of mass production cameras, and the Canon team gave him a variety of information on cameras and several suggestions regarding camera design. The information provided went into every detail, and it was unusual to supply fellow competitors with information which might bring them any advantages. Colani was deeply moved by the very fair attitude of the Canon team, describing it as “truly, friendly competition.” In the meantime, the Canon designers absorbed Colani's design philosophy and its essence through the so-called "Colani Meetings."
